Mordechai Gebirtig was one of the most influential and popular writers of Yiddish songs and poems. Born in 1877, he became a prolific poet and song writer, using everything he saw, heard and knew about people.

For four years between 1982 and 1986 the Jewish Music Research Centre hosted research seminars devoted to the Jewish oral traditions. Researchers in different fields (linguistics, musicology, literature and folklore) met and worked together and dealt with shared material that they approached with their own tools and research habits in the attempt to achieve results of an interdisciplinary type. Several topics were chosen – biblical and post-biblical cantillation; aspects of the Judeo-Spanish folk song; specific rituals of the Hassidic communities and the majority of studies are to be found in the present volume.

The book has two aims, which are linked to one another: to reveal the hidden consistency of musical education processes embodied in a wide variety of phenomena, and to present the research results before those dealing with musical education so that they could shape the educational processes.

Vols. 1-4 Presented here is a collection of 350 songs in four volumes, complete with the music, the words in Yiddish and in transliteration into Latin characters, and translations or summaries in English and Hebrew. A comprehensive and lyrical introduction by Abba Kovner, opens the Anthology. Kovner traces the sources of Yiddish song, recreates the pre-war East European Jewish world in which the songs are rooted, and fuses memory with history to make the material live.
