The book Hebrew: Take 2 , for Level II, grew out of the need for instructional material that reflects Israeli society with its cultural heterogeneity, using narrative characters to express the texture of everyday life in today’s Israel . The book has ten chapters dealing with various topics, such as the status of women, ecology, landscapes, the home, education, language and more. The student learns about the Israeli experience while acquiring the language and increasing proficiency in its use. Topics range from light to heavy in terms of difficulty (vocabulary, syntactic structures, etc.) and in terms of textual complexity . Each chapter ends with a story chosen to reflect on the subject matter of the chapter and according to the linguistic topics studied in it. At the end of each chapter, various reinforcement exercises are introduced to implement the subjects studied, to deepen knowledge and to enrich the students’ experience . At the end of the book is a glossary for each chapter, accompanied by Arabic and English translations . Dana Spector and Dalia Roth are senior instructors in the Hebrew Language Unit of the Rothberg International School for Overseas Students at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. They have previously collaborated in teaching and formulating an audio-learning program for intermediate level students. It is direct continuation of the first two parts, builds upon them, and begins from the point reached by the student at the end of part II . This part aims to provide the student with the skill to read advanced texts from the Arabic press and with the tools to read other texts as well. It addresses grammatical issues encountered in modern texts more complex than political press reports, and provides a broad and varied vocabulary, covering a range of fields beyond the political domain. This book is the first part of a textbook of the basics of literary Arabic. The book's purpose is to impart reading and writing skills in Arabic for the beginner student. In a relatively short time, the student will be able to read simple texts and easy articles from the Arabic press. The vocabulary introduced is broad and varied. It includes words and expressions from daily life as well as journalistic terms. The teaching method of this book is based on the theory that Arabic should be taught in Arabic: the student is asked to change sentences, to complete sentences, ask and answer questions in Arabic, and spell sentences in Arabic in order to create a flow in expression (oral and written), to deepen the proficiency of the language and assimilate the vocabulary. There is an Arabic-Hebrew-Arabic dictionary at the end of the book.
