The book Hebrew: Take 2, for Level II , grew out of the need for instructional material that reflects Israeli society with its cultural heterogeneity, using narrative characters to express the texture of everyday life in today’s Israel . The book has ten chapters dealing with various topics, such as the status of women, ecology, landscapes, the home, education, language and more. The student learns about the Israeli experience while acquiring the language and increasing proficiency in its use. Topics range from light to heavy in terms of difficulty (vocabulary, syntactic structures, etc.) and in terms of textual complexity . Each chapter ends with a story chosen to reflect on the subject matter of the chapter and according to the linguistic topics studied in it. At the end of each chapter, various reinforcement exercises are introduced to implement the subjects studied, to deepen knowledge and to enrich the students’ experience . This book is Part III of the Foundations of Standard Arabic series . It is direct continuation of the first two parts, builds upon them, and begins from the point reached by the student at the end of part II . This part aims to provide the student with the skill to read advanced texts from the Arabic press and with the tools to read other texts as well. It addresses grammatical issues encountered in modern texts more complex than political press reports, and provides a broad and varied vocabulary, covering a range of fields beyond the political domain. Advancing gradually but rapidly through a range of grammatical and syntactic issues, the book furnishes the student with the ability to tackle complex texts and read them quickly and smoothly. It stresses throughout the inculcation of standard modern Arabic as used today in the printed and electronic media . As in the first two parts, the study method is based on learning Arabic in Arabic in order to develop the full complement of skills (reading, writing and speaking), deepen the student's familiarity with the language and inculcate the vocabulary. David Speaks Chinese teaches Hebrew speakers colloquial and conversational Chinese. It includes over 400 expressions and over 600 words from the daily vocabulary of the Chinese language, as it is spoken in contemporary China. The book emphasizes practical use of the language and includes a large number of examples and exercise questions. These clarify how to use the words and expressions learnt in the book in context – within situations from Israeli daily life as well as the life of foreigners in China. The book is designed for use by students who have already acquired a basic understanding of the Chinese language, and wish to expand their vocabulary and enhance their conversational skills.

The reader consists of 40 stories written in simple Chinese. The majority of the stories revolve around the life of David, an Israeli student taking his first steps in learning the Chinese language. Other stories are based on well known stories and anecdotes adapted from the Chinese tradition to match the level of the Israeli student. The stories are marked by usage of a variety of words and expressions used in everyday situations in China. Each story has alongside the Chinese its Hebrew translation, and above each Chinese character is its phonetic reading written in Pin-Yin, the official phonetic system used in the People’s Republic of China. The reader is designed for use by beginner level students and is focused on improving the student’s ability in reading and comprehending short texts.

Judezmo — the language also known as Ladino, Spanyolit, and Judeo-Spanish — is a Jewish language composed of Romance, Hebrew-Aramaic and Arabic, and Balkan elements, which arose in medieval Spain and evolved after the Expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, primarily in the Ottoman Empire. The present book is a comprehensive, university-level Hebrew-language introduction to Judezmo, as written in the traditional Rashi alphabet. It includes a structural and sociolinguistic overview of the language and the literature created in it from the Middle Ages through the modern era, a rich anthology of reading selections, linguistic analysis, exercises to reinforce the active acquisition of the language, a detailed chart of the verbal system, and a bilingual dictionary. The reading selections, presented in order of difficulty, were taken from the modern Judezmo literature and press of the past 200 years, and from the rich Judezmo oral literature — including proverbs and sayings, folk songs and ballads, stories, jokes and riddles. The reading selections introduce the reader to the captivating cultural and social world of the Judezmo-speaking Sephardim in the modern era. The linguistic analysis includes a description of the Judezmo sound system, the Hebrew-letter and Roman-letter writing systems used to transcribe it, and a morphological and syntactic analysis of the linguistic structures appearing in the reading selections, designed to provide the reader with a thorough introduction to modern Judezmo in its diverse regional and stylistic forms. The book is meant for individual study as well as group use, and assumes no prior knowledge of any language except Hebrew.
