The Bible, the cornerstone of Jewish culture, laid the infrastructure for the other monotheistic religions, Christianity and Islam, and constitutes one of the steadfast pillars upon which Western civilization rests. The driving force behind the initial writing of the Bible was the monotheistic revolution: the resounding rejection of the pagan world, replaced by a belief in one God, the creator and ruler of the world, who chose the people of Israel to serve Him and keep His commandments. Severing ties with idolatry is not the only revolution that unfolds in the pages of this book. Indeed, the Bible is a book of divine revolution, echoing the voices of many revolutions. This volume enumerates at least sixteen revolutions wrought by the Bible: the creation of narrative prose, the institution of the Sabbath, the establishment of opposition to monarchy, the sanctification of God’s city, the democratization of prayer, the moral critique found in prophecy, the immense extent of its dissemination, and others. All these contributed to molding the Bible, fortified the boundaries of its corpus, and made it a magnet for believers, exegetes, readers, and artists throughout the generations, among Jews and non-Jews alike. The Morton L. Mandel Library of Ideas is a series of “books about books”: the finest writers and experts in their fields have contributed clear and readable works about books that left a mark on humanity – their history, authors, and the influence they exerted at the time of their appearance and in the years since. All the texts discussed are foundational and groundbreaking; indeed, it is impossible to overstate their immense contribution to shaping various societies around the world, their history and culture.
