שלמה סימונסון


Solomon Simonson taught History at Tel Aviv University in Israel in 1955, and rose through the ranks of academia until the appointment as tenured professor (1968). He has been studying the history of Jews in the Mediterranean and Europe, especially in Italy, and other activities to promote Jewish studies at the university and beyond. He has published more than forty volumes and hundreds of articles and other writings, mostly on Israel's history. He was among the founders of Tel Aviv University, where he established the Department of the History of Israel, The Diaspora Research Institute, and the School of Jewish Studies, where he served as Dean in the years 1971-1969. He served as rector of the university in 1972-7 and pro-rector in 1982-1977. In 1973-4 was chairman of the Committee of University Heads in Israel.
