P.A.R.T. 1

Pre-Academic Reading Texts

Synopsis

P.A.R.T. 1 is a textbook for students of EFL. It should be used by teachers together with the accompanying detailed teachers guide to P.A.R.T. 1, (I think… therefore I read), which includes the entire text of the students textbook. Many students do not really know how to learn. The goal of these books is to empower the EFL teacher with a cognitive approach to language teaching. The materials were designed to teach students to learn and think while learning English. Though many elements of this book can be used with any population of EFL students, the approach described here is attuned primarily to the needs of young adults who have failed to acquire the necessary EFL skills during their regular school study. The book focuses on reading and comprehension as its primary target. The materials are for beginners and prepare students to study at a pre-academic level. The approach is based on the idea of the enhancement of students’ cognitive functions at the same time as they are studying EFL. As such it differs from traditional academic approaches. Thinking and cognition are the key to foreign language comprehension. Good thinkers may be defined as those who use effective strategies, and everyone can be taught to become a more effective thinker. The material is designed to encourage students to use good cognitive strategies, and to identify and name them. In this way, students will build up a repertoire of strategies that they can use when approaching any task.
