The twenty-third volume of Textus as well as the forthcoming twenty-fourth are dedicated to the memory of Prof. Isac Leo Seeligmann on the centennial of his birth and the twenty-fifth anniversary of his passing away. In his research and teaching Seeligmann emphasized the relationship between the establishment of the text (constitutio textus) and the exegetical endeavor; in addition, he highlighted the connection between the transmission of the writings and the beliefs of the scribes that copied them. An illustration of this method, an extreme one perhaps, is offered here in his article on Psalm 47 which concludes the major, non-Hebrew, part of this volume; the article was first published in Hebrew in Tarbiz 50 (1980/1) 25–36. We have tried in any case, to carry on Seeligmann's projects and work by dedicating the present two volumes to the subject "Text-Criticism and Beyond". Thus we intend to emphasize that textual criticism should not become an isolated discipline, but rather should remain an integral part of the philological historical study of the Bible. The editorial board of Textus has been expanded in this circumstance in order to comprise representatives of four generations of text-critics formed in Jerusalem. A fifth generation is already at the gate, represented by the editorial secretary, Mr. Guy Darshan, M.A., who undertook the heavy burden of preparing the manuscripts for press. Ms. Naama Baumgarten-Sharon assisted conscientiously throughout this project. I hereby thank the colleagues who participated in this enterprise and the authors that committed their writings to this periodical. Let their work be blessed!

Qui n’a pas rêvé de Jérusalem ? Beaucoup de ces rêveurs se retrouvent cependant parmi les poètes. D’où la place privilégiée qui leur est faite dans ce volume consacré aux “ chantres de Jérusalem ”. A leurs côtés, on verra des penseurs, des écrivains, des artistes, tous inspirés par la Ville.

Consacrer un numéro de Perspectives à « la Bible dans tous ses états » est sans doute un projet ambitieux. Dans cet immense sujet, il a fallu choisir. Quelques « perspectives » seulement, mais qui abondent en approaches nouvelles. The theme for this issue is The Bible in all its forms and the articles contained in this issue deal with this subject. There are three sections in this issue, they are the following: "The Bible and its languages", "From the Bible to Literature" and "The Voice of Art". A final essay is on "The bible from day to day" and is a commentary of film by Israeli filmmaker Avi Mograbi, "But One of My Two Eyes" which was shown in Cannes in 2005.

“ Comment peut-on être Persan ? ” demandaient les Parisiens à l’aimable héros de Montesquieu. “ Comment peut-on être écrivain, ‘’scripteur ‘’ juif en marge du judaïsme ? ” se demandent les auteurs qui ont participé au présent volume de Perspectives. La réponse n’est pas simple. Le judaïsme pour beaucoup de ces scripteurs n’est guère plus que traces (Zard) mais il déclenche un processus identitaire ou une quête des origines qui ne laisse pas l’écriture indemne. Mais qui sont ces scripteurs ? Comment, pour chacun d’entre eux, se situe le rapport au judaïsme ? Telles sont les questions auxquelles se sont efforcés de répondre les participants du colloque qui s’est tenu à Jérusalem (26-28 octobre 2004) sur les “Scripteurs en marge du judaïsme dans les grandes littératures européennes du XXe siècle “ et dont Perspectives 12 recueille quelques conférences marquantes.

Rich and multiform, French influence in the Levant and Palestine was predominant until the end of World War I. While conferring a particular importance upon its religious establishments, France has also always invested in the development of its economic, scientific, and technological relations with the countries in the region. Marking the beginning of France's political disengagement from the Holy Land, the British Mandate period saw, notably, the gradual disappearance of the French language from the cultural life of Palestine. France's return in force to the region would have to await the foundation and decolonization of the State of Israel, first as a close friend of Israel, then, after the Six-Day War, as Europe's most active political power in the Middle East. Terres promises? Terre promise? Entre ce pluriel et ce singulier se situe l’enjeu du présent numéro de Perspectives . La Terre promise serait-elle une terre rêvée parmi d’autres? Une Terre unique parmi les nations? Pour les nations? Ces questions qui ont préoccupé plus d’un penseur se posent tout au long de ces pages, qu’il s’agisse de reconsidérer la notion de Terre promise ou de la retrouver dans la vision de Théodore Herzl ou plus largement de la rattacher aux rapports qu’entretiennent souvent le rêve et la réalité.

Samuel David Luzzatto (Italy, 1800-1865) stood at the head of the Rabbinical College of Padua for many years. He was a poet and researcher of literature, Bible commentator and philosopher, essayist and critic. In addition he corresponded with the major Jewish thinkers of his day on the Enlightenment, Reform movements, and nationalism. In all these areas he distinguished himself through his originality and honesty. These papers were delivered at a conference marking his bicentennial, where scholars from Israel, Italy, and France presented his contributions in the above fields. Anyone interested in Jewish studies, Italian Jewry, or intellectual currents of the nineteenth century will benefit from this collection.

Qu’est-ce que le théâtre juif ? Le présent numéro de Perspectives tente de répondre à la question. Une définition ? Disons que la plus stricte en serait la suivante : un texte théâtral (au sens large un ballet, une chanson sont aussi des textes théâtraux) écrit par un juif et dont le sujet est inspiré par la tradition juive. Mais comment parler d’une pièce biblique de Goldfadhen ou de Leivick sans évoquer la manière dont le sujet a été traité par des dramaturges non-juifs pour qui la Bible, du Moyen Âge à nos jours est une référence constante ? Et à ce domaine immense des pièces bibliques, s’ajoute celui -souvent frère ennemi- des spectacles où figure le personnage du juif, l’Autre, le traître. Le domaine ainsi élargi devenait quasi-illimité. Il a fallu choisir et il appartient au lecteur de juger si nos choix furent pertinents.

Le présent numéro de Perspectives , consacré aux interférences culturelles judéo-arabes, s'est proposé de rassembler des textes ayant pour thème commun les rapports entre ces deux entités que sont le monde juif et le monde arabo-musulman. Les deux termes choisis, mosaïque et arabesque, dans leur polysémie et leur ambiguïté, nous ont paru les plus adéquats pour rendre compte des relations complexes qu'entretiennent, entre elles, ces deux civilisations.

Signer un document, un livre, une œuvre d'art, semble aller de soi. Il n'en a pas toujours été ainsi. Il n'en est pas partout ainsi. Mais d'abord qu'est-ce que signer? Apposer son paraphe? son sceau? Imposer la marque de son style? La signature a aussi partie liée avec le masque et le secret, la personne de l'écrivain (ou de l'artiste), le besoin qu'il a de se voiler, se dévoiler, se rattacher à la tradition ou s'en écarter. Autant de questions qui trouvent leur place dans les pages de ce volume.

“Emprunts, empreintes”. Autour de ce double thème s’agitent nombre de questions. Qu’est-ce qu’imiter? Peut-on imiter et rester original? Qu’arrive-t-il lorsqu’un art s’inspire d’un autre? un écrivain d’un autre? lorsque des domaines étrangers l’un à l’autre se rencontrent? Ou encore lorsque l’écrivain se tourne vers la traduction, traduit et se traduit? Autant de questions auxquelles les six articles réunis sous le titre de ce volume tentent de répondre.
