This volume is based on a series of lectures, which was held on the subject "The University and Social Welfare." One of the major issues flowing from this situation is the question of academic freedom. To what extent do economic, political or ideological power groups limit the university's freedom in deciding which departments or schools are responsible for which subjects to teach and which basic philosophical assumptions to follow? Clearly, governments, which nowadays carry the major share of responsibility for guiding a country's social and economic development, need the university.
