This book explores the early days of Jewish education in the Russian Empire, especially from the socio-economic perspective. Various chapters describe the world of the lonely scholar, emergence of the enlightenment groups, the employment sphere of the educated, education systems founded, the cultural space they shaped and their relationship with the traditional society circles.
