The transition process in central and eastern Europe (CEE) had a profound effect on how individuals interact. Economic and social institutions have changed, requiring an adaptation process by individuals in the move toward a market economy. How each individual accesses, manipulates and uses their networks will determine the use of their social capital. Within CEE, there is a presumption of low levels of social capital. This paper questions the rationale of applying the contested 'western' concept of social capital to CEE countries. It argues that although the concept was developed to understand processes within established democratic systems, it nevertheless is instrumental for analysing how trust is formed, and for understanding cooperation amongst individuals. As such, this framework reconciles literature from sociological and economic disciplines and offers a comprehensive framework for the analysis of social capital on a micro level. This involves positing social capital within a game theoretic framework, while including social learning or heuristics. This is particularly important due to the path dependent social structures and institutions, given political changes in these countries in the last century. Social capital is seen as a dynamic entity, a form of institutional change, which leads to innovation in the existing governance structures. Journal of Rural Cooperation Home Page

המפגש בין החקלאות היהודית בבריה"מ, המממנים היהודים בארה"ב והשלטון הבולשביקי הוא פרק מרתק בתולדות הקואופרציה היהודית בין שתי מלחמות העולם. ספר זה, הממשיך את מחקרו הקודם של המחבר, מעמיק ומרחיב את המחקר בשני כיוונים. ראשית הוא חושף את המניעים האידיאולוגיים של החקלאות המשותפת ואת חיי היום-יום במושבות יהודיות בעיקר בבריה"מ. הספר עוסק במורשת האידיאולוגית הזו ובביצועה הלכה למעשה בבריה"מ ובמקומות אחרים, בין מלחמות העולם, משלהי המאה הי"ט ועד הקמת מדינת ישראל. נראה בו כיצד פנו יהודים מהשטעטלך, בעזרת הקואופרציה מהעיסוק ברוכלות, בחנוונות ובלופטגעשעפט והפכו להיות חקלאים יעילים. חלקו השני של הספר פורש את סוגיית החקלאות המשותפת בעולם היהודי בתקופה המודרנית. אין הוא חושף לקורא העברי רק את תולדותיה המאלפים של החקלאות היהודית בארבע יבשות, אלא מתקן את הגישה השלילית השוררת בספרי ההיסטוריה כלפי מפעלים אלה. בכך מציע המחבר תיקון למשקל שניתן בספרות המדעית למפעל הציוני בעשורים שקדמו להקמתה של מדינת ישראל, על פני העולם היהודי. הספר נעזר בשפע התיעוד שנפתח לקהל החוקרים בארכיוני בריה"מ לאחר התפרקותה וחושף תיעוד ופרטים שלא נודעו קודם.

בישראל מצויים 413 מיני צמחים בסכנת הכחדה ומתוכם 36 כבר נכחדו מאז שנות ה-60 של המאה ה-20. רבים מצמחים אלה נדירים מאד, חלקם הם אנדמיים - ייחודיים לישראל ואחרים - בית גידולם נפגע מאד עד כדי סכנת הכחדה. הספר האדום מביא את כל המידע אודות המינים הללו: לכל מין צמח "אדום" נכתבו תיאור מפורט, תפוצתו בארץ ובעולם, היבטים ביוגיאוגרפיים וסיסטמטיים, מצב שמירת הטבע והמלצות למימשק, לשימור ולהגנה. לתיאור נלווים מפת אתרי התפוצה בארץ ותמונת הצמח. לכל צמח נקבע "מספר אדום" על פי אמות מידה כמותיות שהתבססו על ידע מדעי ועל מערכת ענפה של תצפיות וסקרים. המספר האדום מגדיר למינים הללו את מידת הסכנה להכחדה. המידע על הצמחים ה"אדומים" המובא בספר, מהווה בסיס מדעי למדיניות מימשק ולקביעת עדיפויות בשמירת טבע ובהגנה על פי חוק.

מובאת כאן אוטוביוגרפיה מרתקת של הלל אופנהימר, איש רב פעלים, מראשוני הבוטנאים באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים, חוקר צומח הארץ וגידוליה. סיפור חייו מתחיל בהיותו ילד יהודי בגרמניה בתחילת המאה העשרים, שזכה לילדות מאושרת בחיק משפחתו, בבית הספר ובתנועת הנוער. בגיל ההתבגרות חל מהפך דרמטי בחייו בעקבות אסון ומשבר במשפחה ופרוץ מלחמת העולם הראשונה. עם סיום בית הספר התיכון התגייס לצבא ושירת בחזית הרוסית. משהשתחרר פנה ללימודים אקדמיים, והוא מתאר כאן את לימודיו ואת הוויי הסטודנטים, שכלל טיולי אופניים, שירה ונגינה בגיטרה. השפל הכלכלי המזעזע והתחזקות הנאצים דחפו אותו לצאת מגרמניה ולעלות לארץ ישראל ב-1925. אופנהימר מצייר בהתפעלות את יפי הארץ ומתאר את אנשיה, ומסיפורו משתקפת יכולתו של עולה צעיר להיקלט בארץ בהצלחה על אף הקשיים. בעבודתו החלוצית הקים משתלה בין ביצות הכַּבָּרָה, שהיו נגועות בקדחת, ובהמשך דרכו הצטרף לאוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים ועמד בראש מחלקה בתחנה לחקר החקלאות ברחובות. היה ממקימי הפקולטה לחקלאות וכיהן בה כדקן. מחקרים שערך עם עמיתיו ותלמידיו תרמו רבות לפיתוח חקלאות מתקדמת בארץ וזיכו אותו בפרס ישראל ובהערכה בין-לאומית. חוויותיו בארצות שביקר בהן למטרות מקצועיות כלולות בסיפורו. זהו סיפור אישי, היסטורי ותרבותי, שיש בו אהבת האדם והטבע, שמחה וצער, התלבטויות נעורים וחכמת חיים. הסיפור נכתב בגילוי לב מתובל בהומור בידי אדם בעל השכלה רחבה מאוד, שהשקפת עולמו הומנית, ליברלית וציונית.
