This book is Part III of the Foundations of Standard Arabic series . It is direct continuation of the first two parts, builds upon them, and begins from the point reached by the student at the end of part II . This part aims to provide the student with the skill to read advanced texts from the Arabic press and with the tools to read other texts as well. It addresses grammatical issues encountered in modern texts more complex than political press reports, and provides a broad and varied vocabulary, covering a range of fields beyond the political domain. Advancing gradually but rapidly through a range of grammatical and syntactic issues, the book furnishes the student with the ability to tackle complex texts and read them quickly and smoothly. It stresses throughout the inculcation of standard modern Arabic as used today in the printed and electronic media . As in the first two parts, the study method is based on learning Arabic in Arabic in order to develop the full complement of skills (reading, writing and speaking), deepen the student's familiarity with the language and inculcate the vocabulary. Taxi is a journey of urban sociology in the Egyptian capital through the voices of taxi drivers. Through recounting the stories of different taxi drivers he encounters, the author offers some insight into contemporary Cairo and Egypt.

The earliest scholars of historical geography of the Holy Land preserved a large proportion of ancient toponyms in Arabic speech right up to modern times, and as a consequence, Arabic toponyms became a major source for the identification of ancient sites. For students of Hebrew and other Semitic languages, the toponymy of the Land of Israel provides a kind of ancient 'recording' of a pre-Arab linguistic inventory; in addition, scholars of Bible and Rabbinics, Qumran studies, Samaritan studies, early Christianity and the history of Islam find it of importance frequently. However, the problem is that as yet, the use of this valuable tool is not governed by any clear-cut rules. Scholars could always find corroboration for any proposed identification by pointing to a certain Arabic place name. The present volume is an attempt to formulate rules of toponym preservation based on positive identifications, and through these rules to deal with various historical and linguistic questions.
